at our show we give out bin bags to every lorry coming in and "touch wood" have never had a mess left behind. I think a deposit wouldn't really work as it means more man power in the office

At the Duchy College they fine people if droppings are left outside peoples parking area.

We saw the paper bedding as we left, it was everywhere! I can't believe people would just leave it We always take a poop scoop and bag, cleaning up as the day goes on. So I do like the idea of bin bags at the gate. I'm not sure how you would be able to fine individual people with the large amount of lorries and trailers that turn up? I also think a deposit wouldn't be the way to go, as again, it would be difficult to work out who left a mess and who didn't and possibly start arguments? It's a difficult one.

Why not charge a few pounds extra on the entries and pay someone to tidy up afterwards? Say you charged each competitor £1, and get 100 competitors then the £100 charge from Taunton racecourse would have been covered f.ex. and shouldn't be too difficult to tempt someone with a bit of money for doing it?

Probably wouldn't be able to enforce it but if people won't allowed to tie up at lorries or trailers there is less chance of droppings in the parking area!!! As for charging, seems unfair on those of us who leave no mess and take everything home. There always seems to be a lack of bins at some shows and some people are a little lazy.

Excellent idea - we will look into it. I am sure we could find someone prepared to stay to the end and earn themselves some money.

Bins are a problem when the shows are in a field as they have to be taken to the grounds and removed at the end of the day. Richard and I have enough problems with the tents and jumps. I agree it is unfair on people who DO clear up - why should you have to pay for others lack of consideration for A - SWPA and B - the farmer who needs to return his stock to the fields. As for being a little lazy - the paper left at Lympsham was appalling and if anyone knows who did it please tell me as I never want to find that again at one of our shows - trust me! Thanks for all your comments guys - really helpful. Luckily at the Champs David does have skips about - please use them to put your discarded tents, buckets and dropping in. We hope to have the wonderful Caldicot Air Cadets on the gate so we could pass on flyers as people enter.

I was really angry when I saw said people letting it go everywhere. When they had the horses out of the lorry they had it all left open so wind just kept taking it. I first saw some and it was just a few bits so I picked them up but after my class there was loads. Unfortunately I do not know who the people are.

I actually think the idea of adding a £1 to each entry to cover the cost of cleaning up is a good one. If you are on your own trying to keep on top of droppings is not easy (why do they always go when you mount).

Ah! - we were not really talking about single horse droppings distributed whilst riding, more people deliberately brushing out their lorries and leaving shavings and paper in a pile which then blows all over an area of the field. We have to pick up paper and shavings as sheep are turned out on the field immediately after and for them to eat the paper/shavings could cause them to become very ill.
If it was just individual droppings we would not be making this request. I really like the £1 surcharge idea, but I am sure many will [and do] state they clear up after themselves and why should they have to pay for the selfish few?

Well we bought shavings this year to put in the lorry as we have paper bedding and straw at home and it does blow everywhere!! It was a nice change to have the shavings especially as it was so windy but I saw that some people seemed to have no conscience and as we were driving out, we also saw the mess that had been left behind! We were appalled to see someone empty out their toilet on the Saturday night on the grass verge right in front of us!! We couldn't see who it was and when he saw us, he scuttled off in the opposite direction! It's no wonder some shows have started to charge people; a showground is not a 'public convenience' so please don't treat it like one!

Pure laziness, especially when there was an Elsan disposal unit at the other end of the car park!

It's not as though you have to walk far to find a bin on that site!!
