Hi there, You really need to razor it where it's thinning out and just pull the thicker parts of his mane. His rug may well have rubbed that part of his mane out and you do have to be careful if you're preparing it for the season (although it will have time to grow back as we're only in late January). I had a pony that had such a thin mane that we had to delicately chop the ends to keep it thick and she could never wear a hood or a rug with a neck as she would lose it quite quickly. It's always easier to plait a mane that you have pulled yourself as you know how the plaits are going to lie. It's a good idea also to dampen over the mane daily to get it lying right and this helps you to see any longer, straggly ends that need tidying (obviously only pull when it's dry) Your pony would benefit from having more smaller plaits as it gives the illusion of a longer length of rein. I would maybe have left it a touch longer so you have more to play with and it's easier to practice with (I take it you'll be sewing them in). And as a Hunter Pony type make sure you leave a decent forelock as I think it always looks better sewn up just halfway and tucked neatly under the browband. Lots of luck with your pony this year, Lucy

Excellent answer Lucy, I agree smaller plaits would make his neck a lot longer looking, as although he has a fair bit in front of the sadle , this is disguised by the fact he is part native, and it is showing through his neck. If you could get him to feed on a door, where he has to arch his neck, this would build a bit of top line and give the neck an extra boost.
