a good shine is to show how happy and healthy a horse is...
you could use a shine supplerment, but i have found using feeds that have malasses in help, also make sure the feed and hay are of good quilty.
grooming my grooming routine every day at least twice a day is 1.groom mud off with dandy brush 2.go over body with body brush to lay the hairs flat 3.then go over the whole coat with a goat hair body brush to polish the hair
also rugs help, if you have rugs with that synethic lineing which seems to polish the coat and leaves it flat and helps stop rubs help. also keeping the horse warm when they get cold the coat stands up and is exposed to weather and like our hair when in the rain and wind it drys out. a good shampoo and condistioner helps, i use superpoo and herbal essesces shine condistioner.
id rather use a spay on condistioner when the coat is damp after bathing, i dont like to use baby oil not even on their eyes and noses as it goes very greasy and gets everywhere.

There is a spray that you can buy that is especially for evening performances - some even have glitter in them. Try Supreme Products - Clippersharp sell their products or you can buy over the Internet - there is a link to clippersharp via SWPA website.
OR
Go into Claires and buy one of their Glitter Sprays for a couple of pounds. We used it in huge amounts on the shetties when we did the pantomine. Brilliant for giving them a "twinkling lights" effect under spotlights

Carefull using oil in eve perf as dust sticks to it and "bobbles". If using spray use a waterbased one

We showed our black pony at Olympia without bathing and people commented on they quality of our pony's coat and the way his 'bum twinkled under the lights'.
Together with good food I think the way to a nice coat is good old elbow grease, and plenty of it - keeps your pony not just looking but feeling great too. A proper daily groom followed by a linen stable rubber. If you wipe your hand over a clean coat, you should get white (not grey) grease on your palm. The best gleam ever is when it has come from the inside out ;D
