Can anyone tell me how do make false plaits and how to attach them I have about three inches of mane from the top, which is very fine and for the rest of the neck it's about an inch long and fine. No forlock either Would it be easier to just not bother showing until June/July when it may have grown a bit? Please help!

we plait a stallion for a client that has a patch of really thin mane. if you take from the tail that is same colour or better still from a another mane as its the same type.
you then need to split the thin mane into 3 and place replacment hair on each section (best if you leave a overhang and have someone hold it.) plait mane as normal and trim off ends level with original mane at top leave overhang until you roll up th plait best to stitch then trim off mane leaving a couple of millimetres.
the main disadvantage is that every time you plait the mane if its weak it can make mane thinner each time.
it may be just show as a pulled mane and not plait until winter or if you really need to. i have used hoof growth promoter (cornicresine) on mane and bald patchs to promote hair growth =it works. try feeding biotin as well. condition the mane really well and dont groom it unless really nessacery.

Hi Drakelands, You can buy false plaits but I'm not sure how expensive they are. Years ago my little boy pulled out a very thin plait at the end of my pony's mane about ten minutes before a class. I was panicking as it was a R.I.H.S. qualifier but a very nice woman nearby produced a tin full of false plaits and proceeded to 'pop one on' which took only a couple of minutes. I was very impressed but never found out where she got them from (unless she made her own) but I do know you can buy them. Good luck x

Thanks Kitty, I'll google it! Will let you know. x
Also Fake Forelocks - Does anyone know if they are any good on plaited horses? Just thought they might look a bit strange at the top!?

I've just 'googled' it and there's a really good article by Lyn Russell in a Horse and Hound edition about making your own plaits x
