How hairy is he now? My friend has show ponies. One of them she cant get the clippers near at any cost, so she double, sometime tripple rugs to stop her growing a winter coat. - Mo

well it really depends on type work your horse is doing, and if he sweats up alot, my boy cant have nothing less than a hunter otherwise he spends 1/2 a day drying off from and hack where we have only walked and trotted.
if he doesnt sweat up much just do a trace or blanket, you can always take more off if you feel you need to.

i have just clipped my coloured horse (he was really hairy) does your horse get really sweaty when you ride him/her? if he/she does then i think you should clip him/her.

Light determines how a pony/horse sheds its coat. Most start to loose their wimter/summer woolies about 4/6 weeks after the summer/winter soltices. So if you prelong the daylight hours by leaving a stable light on or, better still, buying one of those very expensive daylight bulbs, then the coat will come out quicker. Thats how they bring thoroughbreds into season so early so they can breed stronger older yearlings for racing. 24 hour daylight!

i used to find it hard to get rid of freddies coat hes such a fluffy old man... but i use a shadding blade, use that over the coat when you see its starting to shed, i use mine twice a day works wonders also rugging up helps... not OTT so that the horse is uncomfotable but just putting a cooler on under neeth rugs help becuase they think its warmer and they start sheding sooner.
