mane rakes are good if you dont overuse them remember you cant put back what you take off. try thinning the mane with a rake and then wet it plait it and put a lycra neck/head hood on to lay it onto one side. this works for us

I use thinning scissors - three cuts - top, middle and near the bottom - BUT from underneath and on a slant! Then you can consider pulling. I do not pull out by the roots - what I use is a thinning knife [Robinsons about £3], back comb and then cut off the few hairs left in your hand. This knife has a serrated edge to stop a blunt cut line.
Do not do all in one go - pony gets fed up and so do you!
