hello,
Im riding a 15.1hh cob this year and i am hoping to enter him into bridgend county show in july. He is a novice and has only been placed at local level with no prize money. Only problem is is that i have never shown a ridden cob before and i was wondering a) what are they ridden in b) what do i wear c) do i enter him in the open or maxi cob class and what is the difference between the two

I believe, as he is novice you will show him in a snaffle, and a plain (hunter type) bridle with a nice wide noseband, you would wear your tweed/tie etc.
Ridden cobs are between 14.2 & 15.1, rider 14 years and over, maxi cob class is for over 15.1 Maybe someone can confirm the age, maybe 15 and over for the rider.
Hope that helps a little

If it is an open class you will prob be better off in a double bridle or a pelham. If it is an affiliated class you will need to be registered and have a height certificate.
It depends on your cobs head as to how thick a noseband you need-my old working cob had a proper roman nose so he wore a 2 inch noseband whereas Lex for a cob has a very dainty head and his noseband is only 1 inch thick. Do you have any pics at all we can see?
Jacob is right when she says that the cob classes are up to 15.1 (but exceeding 14.2) and the maxi cob classes are for those cobs exceeding 15.1. If it is an afilliated ahow you can now purchase day tickets (2 per season) which will save you the hassle of registering and measuring).
Best of luck though-but be warned-cobs are very addictive!!

I found at county level that they are all up to height and unless you are in a working cob class they do prefer them to be 15 1. I rode a 15hh cob and although i did get placed at county sometimes they would call him a pony and hold it against him. I said to a lady at three counties once that her cob looked massive to mine and she said he was measured in at 15 1 but glad they did not do a spot check as he is more like 15 3!! This is why you need an up to height cob. Novices at county wear doubles or pelhams but swpa is a snaffle in the novice. Maybe Lisa could post a piccy of her cob so you can see the turnout. ;D

great thanks. As far as I know its a qualifier for PUK but it doesnt say that he has to be registered or have a height cert.We are gonna try him in a double as I think he would go better in that than he does in the pelham hes in now but he has started going nicely in a snaffle. Il try and get a pic as were doing HT on sun YAY

Here's Lexy, a true HW cob but with loads of quality-pretty head hence the smaller nose band:- And here's No Joke (RIP ) another true HW cob, old fashioned stamp, slightly roman nose so the big noseband to enhance: Sorry the pic isnt that big but you should be able to get the idea! Hope that helps-both cobs were true to height and Lexy still gets dwarfed now!!!

Could be very very nice!! A LW cob as opposed to the HW's in my pic. Needs a bit more condition on the back end, prob running up light in that pic--looks like he enjoys his hunting!!! Nice eyecatching colour too, i think you will do well with him.
Any chance of a side on in hand pic?

your right. His owner is the first to admit she just rides and doesnt concentrate on the finer points of going from behind or accepting the bridle but were doing lots of transitions at the mo to get him up and collected and starting on his hill work too. As for loving the hunting, he enjoys ANYTHING that involves going flat out with jumps.
As for the inhand pic i will try and get one tomorrow but if not were doing an in hand show next week so i'll post it then with some results.
Thanks for the feed back, its nice to see another persons point of view
