We're taking our two coloured boys to the BSPA at The Grange next week, just for in hand classes. I'm sorted for showing clothes, but my husband isn't, and as we won't be doing a lot I don't want to spend a fortune! Will he be okay in darkish trousers, shirt and tie, and a loden green shooting type waistcoat, with his jodphur boots? And does he have to wear a hat, and if so which type? He'll be showing a piebald traditional. This is what they normally look like!

I will start at the bottom. Shoes should be comfortable and suitable for running in. Trainers are frowned upon so look for the black coloured variety if you prefer rubber soles to leather. Trousers can be any colour, but look to be the opposite if the ponies legs, i.e. black trousers behind a pony with black legs will mask the movement of the pony so wear beige. On white legs wear dark colours. Shirt and tie are a must. Tweed jacket [charity shops are the best place to find one] should be worn, but if not a waistcoat in form of a padded one or coloured front are acceptable. On the head a cap with a waistcoat or a trilby with a jacket, but some people dont bother particularly in windy conditions. Gloves - leather - are a safety precaution and your showing cane should be no longer than 30" [so schooling whips are out - thats in the rules] www.sunwillowstud.com/stallions.html follow this link to see some pictures of Colin Tibbey showing his Welsh ponies where they all tend yo wear waistcoats - but drop the white trainers - I find myself looking at them rather than the pony's feet These are just guidelines - what I will say generally is be comfortable so you are concentrating on showing your animal - not whether your hat is going to fall off! What you have described as what you are planning to wear sounds fine to me.

If running on grass I've found black football togs are useful as its gives you grip and stops you from slipping especially if you are handling youngsters or big moving horses

Thank you, I've been in that slippy slidy position myself! We are indoors, and the gelding has a steady trot, not like my boy, I have to get revved up for him!
