How much are you all paying for castrations? It seems to be getting really expensive. I was contacted this morning by someone who is prepared to give away a colt rather than face the uneconomic situation of paying for two retained testicles.

That's amazing! I had a colt done yesterday, all straightforward, local anesthetic with call out and VAT it's likely to be at least double your costs.
Perhaps I should charter a plane to your area with a full consignment of colts - it'll probably be cheaper.

We have a mobile vet down here he specialises in horses he is from ireland he has a surgery up near bude but handy he does more in the field so to speak. Wish I could earn £360.00 we are all doing something wrong, I am sure they hear the words HORSE/PONY and think add on 2 00's before they even start, that includes everything to do with horses/ponies.Including clothing for ourselves.

Cherrytop
It was Duke I had cut yesterday after much deliberation. It just came down to a 'home colt' being too closely related to my mares. I'm intending showing him in gelding classes. He behaved impeccably for the vet.

I have paid about £130 but the last couple of times I have had something go wrong with one of them and I landed up with bills of £300 +.

I had a two year old with one retained testicle cut two years ago. With operation costs, after care, etc it came to £900. The vet at the time even questioned the economics. But I took the line that I had bred him and should take responsibility. I later found out that other mare owners had experienced the same problem. If only I had known earlier!

Yes he's my vet Droppy. Fantastic vet. Never says much, but I wouldn't have anyone else for my ponies.
