did anyone read in H&H about a leather bit?
has anyone ever used one?
i wouldnt imagine it would taste nice, but i guess could be good for young horses to get them used to the bit and salvate.

I have used chamois leather sown around a bit on a pony stallion I have who hates having a cold metal bit in his mouth but will accept the warmer softer feel of the leather. Instead of fighting the bit and chucking his head all over the place he came down on the bit and sucked the moisture out of the dampened leather. The Americans have something similar to bubble wrap that they wrap around a bit that seems to have the same effect. The first bits used by horsemen were made of leather or hemp so it is not a new idea!

I had a particulary cheeky little black Shetland who, as a three year old, tried every possible way to chew the leather lead rope, my leather gloves, other pony's bridles - anything would do! We tried everything including mustard rubbed into the back of the leather. He is an old teenager now and never chewed leather after he was broken and produced as a lead rein pony - don't ask me why!
