Can anyone help me in my quest for knowledge
I know many of you on this site breed. I have only ever heard of this problem once before and the poor pony went through a terrible long hospitilisation and then eventually was put down.
At the Royal Cornwall I overheard someone telling another about her little 12hh ponies problem with her overies. She actually said it was only the night before that they decided she could be shown.
What problems do mares get with their overies? I only ask as the pony mentioned above belonged to the same people as the one who had endured a long spell in a horse hospital. I had no idea that problems with mares overies is so common. As I am considering breeding from my little mare and have never done it before I would like anyones advice on the subject.
Like what symtoms should I be looking for etc? My pony does get a bit moody when she is in season, could this be a start of something worse? I would hate to get myself into something I ended up paying vets bills for.
Any suggestions comments etc would be much appreciated. Thanks Norah

i would think the best thing to do would be to get the vet out before you put her in foal to give her a check out. It may cost you £50 or more but surely its worth it in the long run to know that you have a healthy mare that in turn would carry a healty foal

Yes I suppose a check up might be a good idea. I was just very curious to know what could actually go wrong with a mares overies and didn't think it was such a common problem.

They can get cysts on their ovaries, just like us, had a mare that had one, can happen but is very rare.

Ovarian Cysts ouch! I can honestly say that I had never heard of any overie problems before. I just couldn't believe that one person would have two mares with the same kind of problem.. that's why I thought I would ask if it was common or not. Thought I must be dumb or something. She is obvioulsy unlucky to have such a problem. happen twice in such a short time with two different mares. Thanks for your advice. If it is rare I don't know if I really need to worry about it.. I will look it up in my very handy vet book.

They can get cysts on their ovaries, just like us, had a mare that had one, can happen but is very rare. Horses can get all the ailments we humans get - headaches, sore throats, colds and ovarian cysts. The only difference is that they cannot give us their symptoms!
