I read somewhere the other day the 3.5t horse boxes dont need to be plated. Does anyone know if this is true as were looking at a transit 3.5t. lorry to carry 1, maybe occasionly 2 aprrox 15.2 horses. Has anyone had any experiences with them as I have been told that the chassis are weak and tend to give easily

The best thing you can do is ring your local Goods Vehicle Test Centre (or go on line) and they will advise you. If you are thinking of a 3.5 tonne lorry then they do have to be plated annually. The smaller transit-type lorries with the Ifor Williams bodies on them are graded differently but, again, get in touch with your local test centre. You should have one near you in Carmarthen or Llanelli

Look on your log book to see what class the vehicle is. Class 4 is for cars and Class 7 is for minibuses, campervans / motor homes and small lorries. Not all MOT testing stations do class 7 as they haven't got the height in the workshop for the bigger vehicles on the ramp so you would need to ring around to find one that does if yours is class 7

Richard [Mr RAC man] says transits don't need plating and what Sue has said is correct. Look on the weight plate for the GVW - Gross Vehicle Weight - and if it is over 3.5 it needs plating.
