in open classes ponies should be shown in a pelham or double bridle. However, if he shows better in a snaffle i would keep him in one as i dont think it would make that much of a difference

WE use a pelham on the sp and shp but a pelham with a french link. They go sweetly in it

Personally having had and bred Darties for 28 years, we always used as softest pelham we could find, or Rugby, and a globe or butterfly for 1st ridden, under p uk rules. To be strictly correct for open M and M or ridden Darty it should be something with double reins.

The perception is snaffle - novice, pelham/double - open, so take the plunge and try a double reined bit that suits your pony. Try to keep the mouthpiece similar to what he uses at home and if he is not needing the curb, then take it off completely. We used to use butterfly pelhams on the smaller pony's as there was less "clutter" around the mouth spoiling the total image.
