Well I did some schooling with Gray Knight (GK) today. He has never done anything before like it in his life so I took it very slowly. Luckily he has a lovely mouth and therefore I managed to get him to make a soft outline although its going to be a while before he is completely balanced. Its just with canter he has obviously only ever cantered on his favourite leg (left) and doesnt know how to do it on the right. I managed to get him to do it for a couple of strides before he changed behind and became disunited. I immediately stopped then as I knew it was as far as I could get today, so dropped the reins and gave him a huge pat. So do I continue to try and teach him and if so HOW?? Or do I just let him enjoy life as a XC, hunter, racehorse and not worry about showing or dressage?? The only horses I have had to school from scratch have been babies and are far more receptive, does anyone have any experience of teaching 'old dogs new tricks'??

Perserveriance, jane was 8 when she came and was got confused if i asked for anything more than a walk or trot in a straight line, lol. He will eventually get the canter, it might just take him a while to get used to the idea of cantering on the less favoured leg.

have you tried putting poles / slightly raised poles in the corners and asking just as you "take off"? we usually find this works

start doing small circles at the canter and he should start automatically. Or, exgerate the inside bends.
