Are blue eyed youngstock frowned upon in the show ring? I have a lovely Friars section A with a blue eye. Some observers say she can't be shown - or don't expect to do well because of it and others have said it doesn't matter a jot - it shows ancient bloodlines are present. Who is right? Any thoughts on the subject?
This is a photo of her showing her 'blue' eye.

I think we must say that personal preference comes into this. There is nothing to stop you showing a pony with a blue eye, [and don't let anyone tell you there is], but some judges will not find it "enhances" the apprearance of a pony heads - others won't care as they might like to prioritise on, for example, a bold forehead or a dished nose in a Welsh pony.
There are many very sucessful pony's winning out there and some have blue eyes. We used to show a very good spotted pony that took a reserve Templeton [Cuddy now] at the Three Counties Show [amongst many many other wins] yet we had been put last at one local WPCS show below several lesser ponies and children in a part bred class [unaffiliated]. Several months later the judge came up and apologised stating he had not "seen past the spots". That pony went on to have its picture displayed as a good example of a Welsh PB on the WPCS unit for several years and was finally given to a young lady in Paris at the International Welsh show.
Keep a record of where you come under various judges and be HONEST about your placings and you will soon find out what all judges like and dislike and then you will be able to plan your shows sucessfully and more importantly without wasting money!

Some judges do not like them, others can see past them so to speak. As Medwinatswpa said it all comes down to personal preferance. If i was judging i wouldn't put her down because of her eye esspecially if she was a better example of the breed than others in the class. She looks like a very lovely filly.

Many thanks for your thoughts. I was just interested in what others think. I'm not intending showing her - I rarely show my stock - she appeals to me as a type. Here is a photo taken of her in the last few weeks.

I think a judge should look past the eye colouring, if she is a good quality pony, which she looks to be there is no reason why she shouldnt do well!

We had a Barracks Palomino colt. which was simply beautiful with 4 white stocking and a blaze BUT he had 2 blue eyes, we did take him to one show where he did get 2 1sts but the judge said he couldn't give him any more because of his eyes. I personally dont mind but i suppose it is the judges preference. But your little mare is stunning ;D

Anyone out there who is a cat lover/breeder? How do blue eyes affect the show cat? I have a feeling there are blue eyed whites, orange eyed whites and odd eyed whites (have one eye blue and one eye orange) in Persian cats. Is this true for other breeds? Do they have separate classes for the different types (based on eye colour)? Can you imagine the class descriptors if equestrian shows adopted the same classifications!

I too have a Section A with one blue eye. Didn't stop her winning her first class and going into the Supreme Championship! The judge said she looked cute with her blue eye, loved her markings and moved extremely well ;D. I was really proud.

I've got a smal sec B mare that we showed at county level in SP LR classes, she also qualified RHIS in a big class, she is dark dun, 4 whites, big flashy white face and 2 blue eyes, they weren't bright blue but were still noticeable (SP). All judges said they really suited her, and made her look very sweet!
