Yesterday at work an email came to all mail users. The sister of one of the teacher's is a vet nurse and had phoned her to tell her a couple had been bringing a springer spaniel in for the last couple of weeks saying he was ill and needed to be put to sleep. The vet kept examining him and found him perfectly healthy, so yesterday the couple brought him in and said actually, they just didn't want him anymore, put him to sleep. All of the doggie pounds are currently full and so he was destined for doggy heaven tomorrow.
The email was on my mind all afternoon and I texted my hubby to ask if he would help me help him find a home. I rang the vets and asked for his history and found out he is 8, a full pedigree, no illnesses and perfect manners, but has never been walked so is like a barrell!! I told them I would find him a home and made sure they would keep him until I could get him tonight.
Couldn't wait to leave work tonight and go to meet him. He is so fat you could put a shetland saddle on him, but he is wonderful, he had a bone in his mouth when we met him and let my girls take it off him without a fuss and his tail never stops wagging. We took him on the beach tonight to get to know our three other dogs and I think he must have dropped a couple of pounds already!! At the moment he is curled up at Megan's feet and I just keep looking at him and thinking how could anyone just dispose of an animal, just because they get fed up of them. I am so pleased he doesn't know his time was nearly up. The vets hugged me when I took him home because they didn't want to do the deed.
Anyway, needless to say Toby will not be going to another home, he'll be staying with us, (I am such a sucker for a sob story that people in work have been ringing me today to see if I had seen that email about the spaniel and would I be taking it in?!). I will post some photos when I get some and take more as he loses his weight
