can anybody give me some advice please??
we have seen a lovely horse which is everything we are looking for but it is unregistered.
it is a coloured traditional type, not reg with chaps, so this means we can enter classes but not qualify for any other champs other than the swpa ones, is this correct?
i want to make sure i get the right one for my daughter to do ridden and workers along with the fun "family pony"
am i asking for too much, i doubt she will ever be good enough for hoys etc, so would the horse not being registered not matter?
any help would be gratefully recieved!! thanks jules

If it is coloured surely you can just register it with chaps?

Generally if your pony is of a particular "breed" [i.e. Dartmoor, Cleveland Bay, Shire, Connamara] then it must be able to prove know parentage is also from the same breed and must therefore be registered with its own breed society. Colours are able to be registered with a society/association on inspection to prove that particular animal complies with the rules of each society [i.e. a palamino must have less than 10% black hairs in mane and tail and be one shade lighter or darker than a new minted coin]. Parentage does not matter. The other type of registration is as a type and you register to be able to show under their rules [i.e. showing a hack under British Show Hack, Cob and Riding Horse Association rules]. You should be able to register and obtain a passport [legal requirement for all equines to have a passport] with either CHAPS [Coloured Horse and Pony Society] or BSPA [British Piebald and Skewbald Association]. If you have already got a passport then it will have been issued by a particular society and you can then have it "overstamped" by a second society. So you could register your horse with CHAPS and BSPA! Remember the law states you MUST have a passport so approach CHAPS or BSPA for one to be issued. Hope this helps

thanks, as far as we were told the pony has a passport with the driving society but unknown breeding, so the vendor wasn't sure it could be registered with chaps.BUT... we have since found another coloured horse that is registered and the owners are more forthcoming about his past! fingers crossed!!
