Having ridden both at various times - here are my experiences!
Welsh D's are fire and brimstone, but sensible and not too quick thinking so they look a handfull - but often are not! The are light on the hand and leg, but can hammer the old back and spine with their strong leg movement. Some can be like sitting in a comfortable armchair.
Highlands are highly intelligent and have a wicked sense of humour. When you think they are going perfectly they will suddenly catch you out and do their own thing! [well mine did anyway!] They are strong, weight bearing animals designed to carry a stag for miles and they can be heavy on your hands and legs. I have seen and know some that move with lightness and agility, but others can be "plodders" with a short stride that makes them look heavy on the forehand. Their build is often wider than a Welsh Cob and a small person may find the width of the back hard on the pelvis and legs.
Each native breed has its own personality and you will soon realise which suits yours - just like we do with people.
