it is a good fattening feed. but it can cause allergies in some horses. we had a hunter that came out in heeves and got really hyper with it. best feed ive found to put weight on is adlib hay/hayledge. alfalfa soaked sugar beet grass nuts (soaked or dry) sunflower oil. as its all bulk it will go through the stomache slowly and keep them warm in this weather. for our youngster we give am and pm 1 scoop(heaped) alfalfa. 1 scoop soaked sb 1 scoop soaked grass nuts 1 cup oil. the grass nuts dont need as much water as sb they just need to be crumbly.
a supplement type depending on what is needed, youngstock or health needs.

I use barley rings, D+H brand with added oil. I add warm water and it goes crumbly. The ones who need weight get fed this, sugar beet, stud mix, conditioning cubes + linseed oil, with adlib haylage. I also give youngsters a broad youngstock supplement.

Must admit i have had mixed results when feeding it to horses-it makes some go off their heads, some come up in hives and others it just does the job and puts weight on with no fizz! I think it depends on the individual horse, if you are going to try it, just add it gradually.
A product i have used with great success is weightbuilder-a supplement. My old working cob always used to run a little light, but this stuff was amazing, it costs approx £32 a tub, will last for 4 to 6 weeks and you can see the difference in a couple of weeks. Gives great bloom to the coat and no 'fatty' deposits, just a nice overall improvement on condition. Of course correct muscle definition comes with the correct work but that is not something you'd be doing with a 2 year old. I think you need to play a little trial and error, because what works for one horse may not work for another!
Rolled barley certainly works for our baby bull-he's currently putting on 2 kilos a day!!!!
Good luck with whatever you try but i wouldnt be too concerned, being a baby they are always going through growth spurts!

Our diet is similar to burleylodgestud, but we use micronised barley rather than rolled. It is easier to digest apparently.
Cobblegook is right about youngsters - just like humans they will all have growth spurts at different times and round off at another time. The art of showing is more in entering the right youngster, in the right show, at the right time!
