i want to enter the novice show pony class with my mare kookie this year at Devon County Show, and have never entered a county show before in my life!! am so scared - what do i have to do, is that usually a big class, is it best to stay overnight and if so, how much are the stables, does the judge ride the pony in that class, etc ? i can't wait but i am soooo scared! i have a picture of her jumping with her old owner with a snaffle, would she look good enough in a double bridle? i desperately want to do well in the class but i am terrified, even though its in may!! please help me!!! oh and also, would i get marked down if i used a double bridle? (medwinatswpa, i know i shouldn't use one but is that like an official rule or something? cos i find it really hard getting her on the bit, and a double bridle would give her better topline i think... )

Judges should not ride a novice show pony - that is usually hunters and so on. She should be in a snaffle for novice classes, and you would do a show similar to ones at other shows. Usually the stewards will tell you what to do - just hope you don't get pulled in first!
Getting a stable will depend on what time your class is. If it is first thing in the morning you may want to stay overnight, but if you go down for the day get there early! No doubt you will want to wander around the show, so a stable might be better than leaving your pony in the trailer/lorry. Stables are quite expensive as are county show entries. Just go with the intention of enjoying - anything else will be a bonus!

You can learn alot by just watching others. Try and get to as many shows as poss and practice and as Medwin says, enjoy yourself.

Was also thinking of entering this year with Tiger my new Riding Horse/ Hunter type. Thought i would see how we got on at a few early shows before making a decision. The only negative point is that he has a large splint on one of his front legs, what do you think?

The only negative point is that he has a large splint on one of his front legs, what do you think? really does depend on the judge to be honest-some dont mind them while others will penalise them heavily. You may find if the judge cannot split your horse and another but the other has clean legs it may well go above you. I think if you get everything else right-make sure the horse is correctly schooled and gives a mannerly polite ride then the splint should not cause you too much concern. There was a well known cob on the circuiit a year or 2 ago that had splints you could mount off and was still very successful because it gave a fabulous ride. You could also try splintex and try and get rid of the splint or at least decrease it in size-magnetic boots also work well. The main thing is though dont be put off-go and give it a go!

amy Just enter and enjoy yourself, Dont worry about it at all - you will have a ball im sure, County shows are just bigger than other Shows with Brill Shopping loll
As already said Devon County can get very busy and the traffic soon builds up so if you dont go the night before leave yourself plenty of time

have decided to enter my shetland instead - not in the show pony classes though i realised Kookie is a SHP not SP and because you have to gallop in the ring i am not comfortable with doing that, so the shettie classes it is!
