I see the entry fees have gone up a pound but the prize money hasn't. For members it was 5 pounds to enter in advance then 5 pounds first prize. Now if you win you don't get the entry fee back. Just wondered why?? I know some shows don't even give out prize money but wondered if there was a reason. Cost of judge etc???

Maybe it's the all-round cost of actually putting on a show! I do think that we're quite lucky down here with the cost of entry fees; my friend recently went to a PUK Winter Qualifying show show in the Sussex/Kent area and paid £15 per class with no prize money offered! The conditions at the venue left a lot to be desired as well!! Also another friend of mine organises shows and has had to put money in out of her own pocket on occasions where entries have been low and their entry fees are quite often twice as much as SWPA! And as far as prize money goes, anything is a bonus as we all end up paying out much more than we ever win in the Showing world! I understand that we need to watch what we spend in this current economic climate but we all expect certain standards when we go to a show and this must have to reflect in the entry fees. What do others think?

15 pounds a class Unless it's a county show i don't think i would enter a class at that cost unless it qualified you for something big. Would rather go to a smaller show. We all expect to pay alot at county shows as the insurance is very expensive. I wasn't saying it was expensive at swpa shows just wondered why the increase that's all. I am the last person to be " having a go".

Surely we dont show ponies for prize money!!!! I'm sure very few do if any, Isn't it about enjoying the showing, believing in our ponies and a very expensive hobby, the cost of even getting anywhere local would not cover costs...Think about cost of venue, judges travelling, lunches, entry forms, schedules (postage now is crazy) first aid, rosettes etc...Many shows have to take loses we are lucky that people are prepared to organise them for us. Why should we expect to pay more at County shows, after all I think we get better rosettes at smaller shows including swpa, why should they screw just because it is a county show, they still have the venue etc etc I think perhaps the county shows should think about costs, and the relevant societies they make sure we join before even competing if this rule was not enforced I believe they would have larger numbers entering, ok if it is HOYS, RIHS...Not everyone wants to qual for them, but would love to enter their county show.

I would rather have a decent, in other words, BIG rosette handed out down to 6th place or lower if there are very good entries than a small rosette, North Devon Show a good example and prize money. I would rather the club kept the membership and entry fees down by not giving out prize money. Prize money is spent very quickly but you will always have a lovely BIG rosette to keep.

Prize money has never been linked to entry fees, but is in line with the national showing accociations and what is their defination is for the various categories e.g. confined novice. Several years ago the defination for novice was "not to have won a cash first prize exceeding £5".
The rise in cost of entry fees is purely down to the rise in venue fees, rosette costs, judges travel expences [petrol] and printing. We hope that £1 increase overall will ensure we don't loose money this year!

I always forgot to collect prize money if we won any. First year of doing SWPA I didn't even realise there was prize money. To be honest it's rare to have prize money at all these days unless it's county level, so without meaning to sound rude, be grateful there's prize money at all. Most 'local' shows don't offer any.

PUK give shows the option to hand out prize money - we just give out in affiliated classes [which is most of them at our shows!] so that the novices have more opportunities to stay novices by not winning any prize money
