I had one that was always doing it. I put electric tap round the tree but he only had access to one tree. You can put cribox on I did that and tree is still alive. I could not find out why and he still does it 5yrs later.

Horses and ponies that chew wood, usually depicts a lack of fibre in their diet, it occurs mainly in the winter when the grass content is poor and they make up for the fibre by eating bark, the rain softens tree bark and makes it easier to strip. You are doing right by adding seaweed and mineral lick, but have you a lack of forage? Boredom also can cause it, so if I was you, and you have not got a lot of grass, add a good load of hi fi, or good hay to the diet, and rope off the trees!!

I forgot to say, that you could get wire like they use for rabbit hutches and wrap around the trees, quite a cheap easy solution. Also mineral lack like copper can cause it, this year has mimicked the winter so well that your pony thinks it is winter and he better start eating to maintain condition, bulk up his food, and see if it helps.
