Most commonly used is the Liverpool, you can get rubber, vulcanite or nylon mouthpieces which would be softer in young ponies mouth rather than the nickel or steel.

I driving and break all my youngstock with a Happy mouth Liverpool. They are not that easy to find, but worth it. They are lovely and soft. I always start mine with the rein on the snaffle ring rather than the bars. Hope that helps....
