We went to a show today is was a medium size regular show that we go to support
the judge in our classes was the worst I had ever seen
firstly is was wearing a bowler hat too small for him, and a pair of black trousers and a puffa style jacket no cane, didn't looked clean shaved and was chewing gum Seriouly I was waiting for him to have a f*g and a chat on the mobile while judging!
Judging procedure.
the horses go in the ring walk round for about 10/15 minutes then do individual run around the ring then he pulls him them in any order (the steward by the way is doing nothing but watching) and then he walks up the line a hands out the rosettes!
now for the rant: people go to these smaller shows to learn, and several people today this was there first show! they are now going to go away thinking this is correct, the judging was really poor and animals that should have been placed high was ignored...
I did speak to the organiser but he seems uniterested, thought I was moaning I suppose - but they dont see with bad judging people are not going to support there shows I dont think we will do another one!
rant over!!!
hope there arn't to many spelling mistakes...x

awww poor you
i hate it when you come away from shows like that... i remember i was competing my friends horse once and and with out asking someone came running into the ring waving a mobile phone to someone, scaring the youngsters...
to find out that its the lady in the rings daughter asking if shes could eat the cake in the fridge! i nearly slaped her to get some sence into her and the judge allowed this to go on!!!!!

This sort of thing makes me so mad. I spent 12 years doing local shows before I went for my P uk judges exam, before I even attempted to judge , even at local level, I watched what good judges did, and it taught me so much. As a judge and competitor, I expect to be treated well as a competitor and as a judge expect to give everyone a good and fair judging, as everyone pays the same entry fee for the class. You are not ranting, you were not treated well in the ring, and that judge needs to get some good advice from someone that knows!! Why these shows do not try to get at least someone with some sort of knowledge of judging order, I do not know, but I have seen a driving class at a major show once judged by a young lady wearing shorts!! Needless to say it caused uproar! Complain to that show, and do not give in.

I always thought my pony wasn't that good as she was always down the line at local shows. So we tried bigger shows for eg Devon county and at this her first big show she was 3rd in hand. Not a bad pony after all just some judges at small shows haven't got a clue!!!

Yes it would make a good read, but in this case I won't be pen to paper. Much as I love showing there, my attention is turning towards breeding good quality shetland miniature ponies. My home bred filly now three went to stud this year, fingers crossed everyone we will have a foal next year.

Oh dear, it doesn't do much for us that have studied and gone through the ranks of pony club / breeding / gaining experience from general horse ownership, etc, then onto judging- does it? I always judge what I see on the day, I can honestly say, I am always proud of my judging, and do my best. I try to offer advice, wether its taken is up by whoever asks! but I always try to help -at the end of the day it is ONLY my opinion. I know just where you are coming from as I see judging that is unbelievable at times, and wonder well, how did he/she come up with that one! at the end of the day, this is supposed to be fun and if you don't agree with the judge, don't go under them again! but as an exhibitor, you must be able to see your ponies faults as well; they all have them- the perfect pony is yet to be bred.

Thats nothing! one year at our pony club show we had some man that:- - made the tack and turnout class do a show and then placed people down because he didn't like the horses paces -Made the lead reins canter -Made the first riddens gallop -Ask the smaller 'best ridders' to rein back
The man MUST have been on medication!!!! Needless to say he wasn't asked back again

I would like the opportunity to reply to this rant as I think the show you are referring to was one of which I am a committee member.
Unfortunately, I have to agree with what you have said. Although I was not in this ring (in-hand was it)?, your was not the only comment on that particular judge.
However, in our defence. We run 3 shows, sometimes 4 a year and are constantly trying to find judges who have not been with us before, if for no other reason than to give all a chance. It is a commom comment to hear people say, Im not going if he/she is judging, they dont like my animal.
This year we are putting together an omnibus programme for all our 2008 shows and therefore hopefully can secure judges early in the season.
Please do not let one inefficient judge put you off coming to our shows. We have been running them for 10 years now and I think you must agree the occasional "misplaced"? judge is not too bad going.
Oh, and by the way, if there are any judges out there who would be prepared to give up a few hours to judge for us, please get in touch. Otherwise, we could be back to the senario of having the same judges next year as we had this.

Well done for replying to this thread - it is difficult and sometimes sadly you ask someone to judge with the best intentions and it backfires on you - the only thing you can do is not to ask that judge to come again. I have not done very much judging but am astounded at some of the judges I have seen whilst competing and although I am not that experienced I have been asked to go back again for the same show so can't be that bad LOL good luck with finding great judges for 2008

I can only suggest you look in the breed society year books for a list of judges, or puk have a list as do NPS, BSPS, but don't ring up the week before you want a judge as we do get booked up, sometimes a year beforehand! I for one always try to accept, but if its a long way away I do ask for accomodation and petrol money.
