Transport of Animals by Road, Short and Long Journeys
Part A for Cattle, Cattle & Sheep, Sheep, Pigs, and Horses.
Part B for Poultry and Game Birds.
From 5 January 2008 transporters or attendants using road vehicles to transport livestock, in connection with an economic activity (over 65km & up to 8 hours for short journeys, and over 8 hours for long journeys) will need to hold Certificate of Competence.
Training Courses and Assessments will be held at Bicton College to cover the new legislation regarding the Transportation of Livestock. This training will culminate in a GOLA test for NPTC Certificate of Competence.
The candidate will be able to
know and understand the following:
1 Risk assessment and legal requirements
2 Responsibilities when transporting animals
3 Planning a short journey by road
4 Suitability of the vehicle
5 Checking animals and fitness to travel
6 Causes and signs of stress in animals
7 Space allowances, stocking densities and
segregation requirements
8 Handling and animal welfare in transit
9 Post journey requirements
Duration:
1 day for short journeys
1 ½ days for long journeys
Test only 1.5 hours

18 October 2007 10am - 5pm
1 November 2007 10am - 5pm
15 November 2007 10am - 5pm
29 November 2007 10am - 5pm
13 December 2007 10am - 5pm

The long journey course is now also available and will be run alongside the short journey course on selected dates according to demand.
