Ok to cut a very long story short i had a mare with a foal at foot come in in may to be covered by my stallion, its the only mare that didnt take this year(thank god) but they came to pick it up a couple of weeks ago and couldnt load it the owner spent 2 hours or more with the poor mare rearing and throwing herself around with one of those controller headcollars on after 2 hours the mare went up and straight over backwards on the concrete she was a real mess and the owner still tried after that but it was clear that the mare was not giving in even though she looked like she was going to have a heart attack, so the owner gave in and said she would have it shot i stepped in and said no way were they going to shoot the horse just because it wouldnt go in the lorry So i had the vet next day at the owners expense stitched it up bandaged all wounds etc, on bute and antibiotics thought all would be ok once the swelling had gone down (she looked like the elephant man)
few days later started turning her out in a small paddock as the foal was driving her crazy in the barn all seemed ok but still very lame on the front. The owner now tells me she doesnt want the mare back whatever happens and she is mine if i want her but she will pay the vet. two weeks on the mare was still lame in front so i took the decision to call the vet again (the foal has now been taken by this point and the owner has said she wont leave me in the s h i t with the vet bill and will pay but doesnt want to go spending mega bucks on a mare she will ultimately never get home so the vet came out on wednesday this week and nerve blocked the foot to rule that out and she seemed slightly better so we put it down to maybe a bruised sole so advised to keep her in and on bute for a couple more days she strapped the leg back up just in case and said she wanted to xray the knee just in case it was chipped or cracked but would need to speak to the owner first - owner says no chance and washes hands of the mare, I arrive at the yard (just having been informed of what the owner has said) to put the horses to bed at 8 on wednesday evening and the mare is standing in the barn holding her front leg off the floor and hopping around on three legs, quick phone call to the vet and 11.30 that night the prognosis seems to be an abcess great i think well thats easily treated. So poultice goes on leg strapped back up (taking no chances) Next day she is still hopping on three legs remove poultice nothing in it. Vet been back today with another vet and they have x rayed the foot and wait for it.............................No abcess instead a broken pedal bone I now have to make the decision as to wether to put this mare to sleep or pay the money to fix her. Half of me is screaming be realistic put the mare to sleep but the other half of me is saying this mare is 7 yrs old and a human being caused this damage and she deserves a chance.
What the heck am i going to do please someone help me
