please help am wanting to show my welsh C at the end of the month at the west welsh show now my problem is that he is a right wooly bear iv tried rugging him up to keep it flat and to try and slow down the growth (he was rugged early to try and help) he doesnt travel great so always sweats up in the trailer so will look a mess by the time i get there so question is do i clip him and if so what sort of clip and should i do it now or few days before the show? I know it says to show them natural but i looked at a welsh show pictures in another area of the country and loads of them are clipped and the champion was clipped right out except the legs so please please help me and hot chocolate and cookies for getting this far ;D

Its really difficult isn't it. My daughters welsh A is very hairy at this time of year but shes still going to show him like this as you should always show welshies naturally if your showing inhand. I'm not sure of the criteria if its a ridden class.

if you read wpcs rules it states that horses can still be shown clipped fully with legs left on.

i wouldnt have thought so for the simple reason that the judge doesnt know what else you do at home for all they know you could be hunting him through the winter therefore he needs to be clipped

Trimming Guidance for Showing 6.9.1. The Welsh breeds are a Native breed and too much trimming and pulling detracts from their native characteristics. Pure bred animals registered in Sections A, B, C, D & E must be shown in as natural a state as possible, manes and tails must not be plaited with the exception of a single long plait behind the ear. 6.9.2. Animals, 3 years old and under must not be body clipped for showing purposes. Animals 4 years old or over, which have been clipped for winter activities can be shown. Fresh clipping for spring shows is not permissible. Judges must take special notes of this. Legs must not be clipped. 6.9.3. Long hair under the jawline and those protruding from the ears may be trimmed off leaving as natural a line as possible. The whiskers around the muzzle may be trimmed. 6.9.4. If the mane and tail are very thick, they can be discreetly thinned to show off the topline and the hindquarters. The tail should look natural and should not be “banged” (leveled off square). 6.9.5. Artificial changes to the original markings of an animal as recorded on the Passport will not be allowed, nor the addition of false manes and tails. 6.9.6. Welsh Part-Breds should preferably be plaited but this is optional.
