Titch, I am so pleased some one raised the workers classes questions - I would hate to see them reduced in schedules through lack of support and this is not a statement just for SWPA. I am judging affiliated and unaffiliated workers this year and I keep encouraging entries as numbers in the last few years have difinately been reducing or cancelled other than the exceptions at some some shows.

At the swpa finals i thought some of the classes were well attended especially the novice plaited worker mixed group had about 15 in it!

I am surprised at your comment as we only compete in worker and felt that a majority of classes were well supported. At a recent local show there were at least 20 plus entrants in the novice class, I thought for a winter show that was good.
I like titch would welcome more classes.

I think last year the only two swpa shows that had whp qualifiers were David Broomes and Lympsham, correct me if I am wrong.

Funnily enough, we had some WH classes with 13 in today, but generally they are very poorly supported. They are very expensive to put on unless you have your own set of jumps - £200 - £350 with a course builder and to run affiliated you have to add the cost of an affiliated judge and the affiliation itself which will be another £60 - £150. All that's without the share of the overall show costs, grounds, rosettes, prize money, schedules etc. If you only have 30 entrants at £10 per class you only have an income of £300 and will therefore run the ring at a loss. That is why WHP rings are being lost at shows.
If you do have your own set of jumps then the work involved in setting up is hard and long. Today we have had help from an incredible gang of young people and we are home before dark, but sometimes everyone goes home and the dismantling of the showground is left to a few people to do. If the workers are also not paying their way it does not take much thought to not run the ring again!
Today we had good numbers in some WH classes, excellent going as the ground had been watered and rained upon and no accidents for the Horse Transport to deal with. Lets hope we can say the same after the July show which are now the only two shows left where we run workers.
