one aspect of the shows i dont agree with is judges talking to competitors (as friends) when they are entering the ring and when judging. when judging the judge should treat everyone the same wheather they know them or not it is not a place for a nice gossip. and not to call competitors by there first names to come out of the line. im only commenting on this as i have seen it happen at swpa shows and it looks very unproffessional.

Sadly its a very small showing world but I am sure it makes no difference to the final decision with the judges we use. If its Stewards calling competitors by their first name please let me know and I will address it but it is a world where we do tend to get to know each other quite well and when you are busy its not always easy to remember what we should and should not do - I try to be very professional at all times (I hope) but some of our younger stewards may not realise they are doing this. Also should people really be going under a judge who is also a personal friend (I certainly would not) but then that is showing. Thank you for your comment and I will try and keep a closer eye out for this at the next show.

As a judge I find it difficult when I am asked to judge at a show in my own locality to not speak to people. Some I may not have seen for some time and they are just passing a pleasant "hello" and asking after the family. It in no way influences my decisions in the ring and most of the judges who regularly judge at our shows would say the same.
There are however competitors who seek out judges at shows for their own reasons and do not respect the fact they are at the show in the capacity of a judge, and whilst we try to keep judges and competitors seperate, at some of the smaller venues it is not always possible.
As secretary I have never heard a judge call someone out of the line by their name, nor any stewards, so please draw that to my attention should it ever happen again.

i understand it is a small world and yes we all get to know some other competitors. it is hard to remember to put business separate from leisure.
i just thought id mention it as i have heard competitors and spectators mention it in a "oh they know them so they will be placed" even when it probably has nothing to do with the decsion. it just looks unprofessional for outsiders. its amazing what you see/here esp when your not showing and just as a spectator.

Yes it is a small world! One class I judged yesterday had two former pupils, two neighbours, several SWPA members and 7/8 of the class I knew. No chance of favouring any one person there then!
Remember comments made by spectators are their own opinions, and not necessarily the actions of the person judging in the ring.

I fully understand your point but I think when you've been showing for a good number of years, you do become friendly with a lot of people as at the end of the day, the social side of showing is very important to a lot of us. When you live in a certain area (and it's the same everywhere) you eventually become familiar with most showing folk at whatever level. The important thing is to remain as ethical as possible. If someone is straight, they should do you no favours at all and if you have any doubts, then maybe you shouldn't show under them. We all see judges, producers, competitors chatting and embracing each other at the highest level. Then a couple of weeks later they may be seen to do their friends a favour? Or was it just that their animal was the best in the class? What you have to remember is that some people have had long standing friendships for years and I know a friend of mine says she will stay out of the way of her 'judging friends' if possible but will not purposely blank someone at a show that she's known for years! I think it's a difficult one but all that aside, I don't think it's acceptable for judge or steward to call people in by their first names. I experienced that a couple of years ago and the 'familiar' person won the class and it made our blood boil as it was made to look so obvious even if it wasn't. Medwin is right, and as we all know there is always a lot to say outside the ring! After all, it's a lot easier to speculate about what might be going on in the ring (we all do it) than it is to judge or be judged!

everything in the above posts is ok. i wasn't looking for a perfect answer as showing is showing and i hope that the season goes well for all judges stewards and competitors. i will be showing a bit this year not as much as i'd like but i will get to some shows and yes i suppose because i dont really know anyone i cannot say ill not have the difficulty of not chatting at the wrong times. i was just putting my opinion which yes i do say what i think and yes it can get me in deep water but people know where they stand with me. :-Xsubject closed next suggestion please!!!!

You're going to hate me for this - it was a judges partner! hahahahahaha
The gentleman in question is gorgous and looks after the committee so well. He knows Richard loves chololate and as an Easter pressie he gave him [and all the rest of us] a cake. At the Champs during the evening performance he could be seen delivering us all little hot snacks that we could eat with our fingers that he had prepared in his caravan
What can I say? - nothing other than thanks so much "R"!

Just a note to say, yes sometimes the officials call people by their names, BUT, we came to one of your shows, we won, nobody knew us, But, they (officials) knew some of the other competitors. To us it made them seem CHILD FRIENDLY!!!!! (Very Important).

Hi there its Charlie,(Steward for SWPA) I think we need to improve on the rosette bags as some rosettes or cards, are put in the wrong bag and I get annoyed about it! Also, we need more entries as some people sometimes go off for another class, and they think there will be entries in the next one because they're back for the one after that, but there isn't so the classes clash,(as I have experienced)!!!

Lost me a bit there Charlie! Got the bit about the bags and will try and sort that out for you but how do you suggest we go about "getting more entries" to stop the classes clashing?
Or am I reading that all incorrectly?
